Two, long depressing days of testing diagnosed Monroe as HIV positive. According to the doctors, he did not have much longer to live, being that the disease was in its last stages. Unfortunately, his illness had gone untreated. The testing disclosed the disease had dominated Monroe’s blood cells beginning at least two years earlier. Because of the severity of his condition, Monroe was ordered to keep on a mask to protect others and also to remain in the AIDS ward and receive treatment that would enable him to live a bit longer. His doctor was blunt in predicting that Monroe’s death was no more than a month away.

“We can offer some level of treatment that will extend his life for a short period, and in order to do that, we’ll need to keep him here,” the doctor spoke to Eureen.

“Fuck that!” Monroe yelled. “I ain’t stayin’ up in this muthafucka! If I’m gonna die, then got-damn it, I wanna go out havin’ some fuckin’ fun. Why lay up in this muthafucka and die! Why can’t y’all muthafuckas fly some medicine up in here from Africa, or Japan, or the fuckin’ Middle East to cure this shit! If a muthafucka was white, y’all racist muthafuckas wouldn’t have a problem with that! My money spend just like y’alls, but y’all muthafuckas want me to lay up in here and rot! Ain’t that a bitch!”

“Calm down, sweetheart,” Eureen suggested, embarrassed at Monroe’s language in front of Pastor Gardner, whom she had called to pray for her husband.

“No, fuck that! Can’t you see what’s happenin’? They tryin’a kill me up in here, and I ain’t going out like no muthafuckin’ dummy!”

“Can y’all please leave for a few minutes while I talk to him alone ... please?” Eureen requested, seeing Monroe was out of control and acting unreasonably.

“Listen, Monroe,” she said softly. “The doctor’s recommendation is for your own good, so please do as they suggest and quit resisting, using all that foolish and harsh talk. Then maybe—”

“Maybe what?” he snapped. “Maybe I’ll live five or six hours longer? Hospitals are nothin’ but fuckin’ businesses, Eureen! The longer these muthafuckas keep me here and keep runnin’ these expensive-ass tests, the more of my money they get! This is bullshit!”

She sighed, shook her head, and replied solemnly, “Monroe, you’ve gotta realize that there are some things money can’t buy.”

Uninvited, the nurses and doctors abruptly reentered the room, despite Monroe’s agitation.

“Get the fuck outta here! I’m gonna die, any-fuckin’-way, so fuck all of y’all, and fuck the world too! Get the fuck outta here, and leave me the fuck alone! That goes for you too, Eureen!”

Per his request, Eureen left the room, shaking her head and wiping away tears.

Pastor Gardner stood in the hallway, leaning against the wall.

“He’s quite miserable, huh?” he asked.

Eureen could only nod initially, but somehow she formed a few words several seconds later. “He really needs prayer, Pastor. He’s in bad shape.”

“Well, you know the Bible says sometimes a man needs to be
